Who Would Actually Survive a Zombie Apocalypse? We Asked The Cast of Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead
If you’ve seen the trailer for Zack Snyder’s Netflix zombie film Army of the Dead, then you know it’s the must-watch film of the summer. A zombie breakout, zombie heist, zombie queens, zombie tigers—what more could zombie fans ask for? Let’s not forget it’s set in Vegas, and the trailer showed us snapshots of zombie Elvises and zombie strippers, because why the hell not? Army of the Dead is gearing up to be the summer’s biggest action movie, with guns and gore galore, in typical Snyder fashion.
As fun as it would be to watch, Army of the Dead is 100 percent the worst zombie world you’d ever want to actually try to survive in. Because one thing that sets this zombie film apart from the rest? Smart zombies. Talk about a fucking horror show. At least the undead in other zombie movies are also brain dead, but in Snyder’s horrific zombie-verse, we’ve got zombies on steroids that can actually think. Yikes.
We talked to Army of the Dead stars Ella Purnell and Dave Bautista, who lead the cast as the estranged father-daughter duo taking part in the Las Vegas zombie heist. And naturally, we asked them the ultimate question: who among the cast would die first in a zombie apocalypse? And who would survive?
“Not me,” said Ella Purnell, who plays Kate Ward. The first to die would probably be either Ella and Ana de la Reguera, who plays the badass Cruz in the movie, according to Ella and Dave. Nora Arnezeder who plays Lily, the Coyote, is also a strong contender to be zombie meat, said Dave, although Ella argued she might just make it.
Other “maybe” survivors: Raul Castillo who plays Mikey, the zombie-era Influencer; Theo Rossi who plays Burt, the sleazy refugee enforcer; and Mattias Schweighofer who plays Ludwig, the German safecracker (“He’s a craft person. He might find a way to survive,” said Dave).
As for who would definitely survive? They both agreed on Samantha Win, actress and martial artist who’s starred as an Amazon in Snyder’s DC films. Another surefire survivor would be Omari Hardwick who plays the chainsaw-wielding zombie killer Vanderhoe.
And of course, Dave Bautista, who could pulverize the undead with one meager bicep curl.
“Definitely me, Sam Win, Omari, we’re definitely surviving,” said Dave, and it wasn’t even a boast. “I think I would survive.”
I mean, was there even any doubt?
Army of the Dead drops on Netflix on May 21.
