Lin Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton started as an experimental musical, drawing heavily from hip hop, R&B, and soul. When it launched in 2015, it became an instant sensation. Around the world, Hamilton sparked conversations about race and history.

Today, Disney released the official trailer for the musical, which will stream on Disney+ starting July 3.

Apart from the musical genre used in Hamilton, the casting also became an important talking point among the audience. According to Miranda, he deliberately cast people from diverse ethnicities to play white characters such as Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, and George Washington.

“Our cast looks like America looks now, and that's certainly intentional” said Miranda in an interview with the New York Times.

“It's a way of pulling you into the story and allowing you to leave whatever cultural baggage you have about the founding fathers at the door.”

Hamilton tells the story of Alexander Hamilton, played by Miranda himself. He is considered one of the most hardworking and important founding fathers of the United States of America.
