Now that’s a headline we never thought we’d write. It sounds more like a line out of an ultra-conservative Catholic school textbook to scare students into wearing chastity belts. But no, it’s science.

According to a study by the University of Nottingham, men who are very, very sexually active in their 20s and 30s are more likely to develop prostate cancer, especially if they masturbate a lot on top of that (see what we did there).

The study was based on the thesis that a high sex drive can affect the risk of prostate cancer as hormone therapy is a treatment for prostate cancer.

So, it looks like your nightly romps in your 20s and 30s weren’t such a good idea after all. But that isn’t the case for ages 40 and up. The study actually found that sexual activity in your later years can lower your risks of cancer, as opposed to having sex and masturbating too much in your wild youth.

Dr. Polyxeni Dimitropoulou, the author of the study, explained it as follows:

“Overall we found a significant association between prostate cancer and sexual activity in a man’s 20s and between masturbation and prostate cancer in the 20s and 30s. However there was no significant association between sexual activity and prostate cancer in a man’s 40s.

“A possible explanation for the protective effect that men in their 50s appear to receive from overall sexual activity, and particularly masturbation, is that the release of accumulated toxins during sexual activity reduces the risk of developing cancer in the prostate area. This theory has, however, not been firmly established and further research is necessary.”

There you have it. If you’re still young, we’re sorry to say you’ll have to keep it in your pants and your hands to yourselves. A little chastity can go a long way (we’re just bursting with inappropriate jokes).
