Japan Cancels Visas For 11 Countries, Including the Philippines

Starting this Saturday, previously issued single and multiple-entry Japanese visas will be invalidated.

The Japanese government on Friday has decided to invalidate visas issued in the Philippines prior to March 27, 2020. This visa suspension starts on Saturday, March 28, following the public health crisis posed by COVID-19

On their official Facebook page, the Philippine Embassy in Japan stated that "the Japanese Government is invalidating previously issued single and multiple-entry visas issued prior to 27 March." According to the same post, additionally, APEC Business Travel Cards visa waiver treatment will also be suspended from 28 March throughout April. 

The third stipulation is as follows: "There will be enhanced quarantine measures for incoming travelers from the Philippines. Specifically, those who enter Japanese territory from the Philippines will be asked to undergo a 14-day quarantine period at locations designated by quarantine officers at their ports of entry. They will additionally be asked to refrain from using public transportation before the quarantine period is exhausted." 

As of writing, no guidelines have been forwarded regarding the status of work visas.

The embassy has also yet to respond to queries asking for clarification if the said mandate will only be effective temporarily.

This March 27 announcement is an update of the memo posted on the Embassy website last March 19. The latter announced the suspension of visas issued in the 38 Schengen member States valid by March 21, 2020. Subsequent applications by these countries for a Japanese visa were also temporarily suspended.
