Tapestries were all the rage in the Medieval Period, the age of knights and dragons, kings and conquests. You may have come across one of the most precious examples of the decorative art—a docile unicorn hemmed in by a circular enclosure found on a field of flowers—while scrolling through your Instagram feed. Once upon a time, “The Hunt of the Unicorn,” a series of seven tapestries that now hangs at The Cloisters of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, added visual and literal warmth, plus a dose of fantasy, during the winter months in a French castle.

Now, imagine that long-ago magic, not to mention the high skill required to make magic, applied to everyday things.

Dior artistic director Kim Jones did the dreaming for you, exploring the tactile art form to create the new Oblique Tapestry. To be even more specific, the new material is a soft wool embroidery done by the artisans of Dior’s ateliers, and if you look closer, the tapestry technique imparts a delicate look and a certain warmth to the house's Instagram-cool streetwear pieces. As well (and more important), it makes you want to touch, stroke, and maybe even cuddle a pair of sneakers because they remind you of that well-loved pillow in your living room.

This subtle invitation to touch comes at a time when you need something to hold to get you through the day or something beautiful and well-made to just look at to make you dream once more. Comfort comes from the most unexpected things—even a designer high-top sneaker inspired by tactile Medieval art.
