Class rings used to be popular. But recently, the accessory has seemingly been retired to give way to something new: alumni watches. The newest school to join the trend is San Beda University. Its Red Lion Watch Series, a fundraising tool by San Beda batches GS ’92 and HS ’96, will support the upcoming 2021 Grand Alumni Homecoming.

Designed by alumni Mark Wesley Pahate, the timepieces are inspired by the university's symbol, the Red Lion. There are three limited-edition designs, Blood Red, Obsidian Mystic, and Raven Black, all of which come in a stainless steel case with an automatic movement.

The Blood Red is a tribute to San Beda's tradition of excellence in multiple fields including law, business, and medicine. With a blood-red faceplate, it speaks of the "same blood which unites the whole Bedan community." The Obsidian Mystic combines blood-red and raven black, a stark contrast that symbolizes the university's themes of courage and tradition. The last design, the Raven Black, on the other hand, is inspired by the raven in St. Benedict's story of the poisoned bread.

Aside from the dial, the watches feature more Bedan details such as "Ut In Omnibus Glorificetur Deus," which translates to "That in all things, God may be glorified." On the caseback, you'll find St. Benedict's cross, the Benedictine medal, engraved as protection. Each watch is numbered and registered, as well, with only 200 pieces produced so far.

Each timepiece comes with a seal of authenticity that reads: "In the spirit of Bedan camaraderie, we aspire to make new memories through this limited edition watch as we try to connect with other lions, inspired youthful greatness, and revel in the wisdom of the experienced."

The watches are P19,960 a pop and currently, all 200 are spoken for and sold out. But don't fret, another batch will soon be produced, so it's best to secure your spot right now as there's already a waitlist.
